To educate children and celebrate America 250 with them all year, Kids Up is excited to present
America 250 for Kids
Our program features three works of South Carolina author Kate Salley Palmer:
Almost Invisible: Black Patriots of the American Revolution
Palmetto – Symbol of Courage, which chronicles The Battle of Sullivan’s Island
Francis Marion and the Legend of the Swamp Fox
Our first edition of lessons focuses on the Black Patriots book. For each patriot we have created a quick video, an academic lesson plan and an art lesson to compliment the patriot’s story.
Example Lesson
Lesson Plans
Academic Lesson Plan for James Armisted – Play the video, read story aloud twice first by the teacher, second by a group of students, each taking a line to read aloud; research two historical mentions of battles, places or people from the story; select the review two vocabulary words from the story.
Art Lesson Plan for James Armisted – Students will create “Secret Spy Scrolls” to honor James Armistead, the Black patriot who served as a double agent during the Revolutionary War. Using tea-stained paper for an aged look, kids write or draw secret messages of freedom, then roll and tie them with string. Teachers can share how Armistead’s intelligence work helped win the war. The scrolls can be displayed in a “Spy Secrets of Freedom” gallery.
